Description

Synopsis of the presentation

Lithium-ion batteries are amazing. I will show an example of a Li-ion cell that has undergone 27,000 100% depth of discharge cycles over 8 years. This is enough to power a vehicle for over 10 million km or around the circumference of the Earth about 250 times. Such Li-ion cells can easily support vehicle to gird and second use. I will discuss:

  • How does one make such a wonderful Li-ion cell?
  • How does one stop common degradation modes as we have done here?
  • The Li-ion cells in most EVs are not this good but they are still plenty good for V2G if operated "sensibly". What does this mean?
  • What are best practices for charging EV batteries and how can I ensure my EV battery lasts as long as possible?

NOTE that this webinar starts one hour later than the usual start time due to the timezone of the speaker.

Professor Jeff Dahn is recognized as one of the pioneering developers of the lithium-ion battery that is now used worldwide in laptop computers, cell-phones and electric vehicles.  Dahn's recent work has concentrated on increasing the energy density, improving the lifetime and lowering the cost of lithium-ion batteries.  He is the author of over 820 refereed journal papers and co-inventor of 78 inventions with patents issued or filed.

Jeff Dahn obtained his B.Sc. in Physics from Dalhousie University (1978) and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 1982.  Dahn then worked at the National Research Council of Canada (82-85) and at Moli Energy Limited (85-90) before taking up a faculty position in the Physics Department at Simon Fraser University in 1990.  He returned to Dalhousie University in 1996.
