NVES legislation ready, but includes further concessions for light commercial vehicles
The NVES legislation has seen a few final tweaks before heading to parliament, but not everyone is pleased. Retailers of large SUVs and light commercial vehicles such as dual-cab utes and pickup trucks were pleased to see the annual emissions target for their vehicles raised by 10 to 20 g CO2/km, while the trajectory timeline for these targets is now less aggressive.
However the AEVA has long argued that because Australia's most popular family cars are in fact light commercial vehicles (Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max), their exclusion from the passenger vehicle target would undermine the intention of the scheme and slow down the transition from petrol and diesel to electric transport. The legislation is sorely needed, but relaxing targets will only add to cumulative emissions.
